combat style: Soma is a second for a reason; he doesn't take charge, he takes orders. A dutiful team player, he provides support for the bolder members of the squad that want to call the shots or go rushing. He's unassuming enough that he doesn't immediately draw the ire or attention of most Shadows, observant enough that he typically knows where he can do the most good, and quick enough to get there. It's not uncommon for him to deliver precise strikes that hinder or distract enemies long enough for his teammates to deal the serious damage. It's also not uncommon for him to deflect attacks aimed at others or pull them out of the way or (however reluctantly) get between others and incoming damage. As in his day-to-day life, taking care of the other members of his squad is his primary priority and he would rather get hurt or force the squad to escape than see anyone take serious harm.
Because he's adept at observing his surroundings and noticing details, he's also quite good at adapting to changing situations. He also pays close attention to the analyses provided by their Support and never lets their input go unheeded. While he's not the strongest guy on the battfield, he's quick and what he lacks in physical strength he makes up for in magical power.
